The Curt Teich Postcard Archives Library includes books and
periodicals on postcard history, collecting, and appraisal, a
complete series of Postcard Collector magazine; the American
roadside; American popular culture; archives administration;
and preservation of paper and photographs. No appointment is
necessary to visit the Archives' Library. It is open Monday through
Friday from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
The postcards are cataloged by city, town, or other geographical
locations, such as rivers or lakes (not by county) and by subject.
There are approximately 175 major and 2,100 minor subjects listed
in the Subject Heading Index.
Standard computer lists are by either subject or location, but
cross-reference searches combining subject and location are possible
-- such as all the court houses in Illinois or all the theaters
in Chicago. The production number on each Teich postcard reveals
the year, and a guide
to this dating system (PDF file) is available.
Photocopies from the original Geographic Indices, records
kept by the Teich Company during its years of operation from
1898 - 1978, are also available. These indices are alphabetical
by state and then by town. The entries are hand written in chronological
order and include the entire title or subject matter of the postcard,
and may also include the customer name, printing style, how many
were ordered, and the date. This can be helpful when a researcher
wants to know more than what the computer subject heading reveals.
For example, postcard 0B372 is cataloged by the location, Quincy,
Illinois, and the major/minor subject heading STREET VIEWS/General,
but the geographic index contains the full title, "Main
Street Looking West Showing Memorial Bridge and Mississippi River."
